AI generated writing does not necessarily equate to formulaic, generic, or non useful writing. If you’ve often noticed it tends to do so when you read it or you may even notice some “patterns” or some “feel” that AI writing seems to have – well it might say more about who was using the tools and the way they were using them, rather than saying that much about the tools themselves.

There’s not any kind of super sophisticated stuff going on here, this is a 100% human written page, so that’s the “difference” you may be noticing here as opposed to some other content you’ve found elsewhere on the internet especially these days.

When it comes to writing code like just the X++ fundamentals over and over again you may not be able to 100% human write the code all the way through though as it’s just too large of a scale. We get it, and you may have good reason to feel that way – it can get too repetitive or tiring to write the same code like a machine and this is where your modern AI and LLM solutions come in to leverage the power of modern machine learning to the next level.

However here’s the problem. Whether we talk about GitHub Copilot training or ChatGPT training in X++ you may have looked front to back and found nothing more than generic ChatGPT prompt engineering training courses. When it comes to the type of ChatGPT model training as if you were fine tuning a model, well it turns out you can’t really do that unless you start going into Azure deployments or start using the ChatGPT Completions API training or other ChatGPT API endpoints. These get very expensive, very fast. Some claim that the per token rate is very cheap, but unless you’re using ChatGPT API in a really specific way (and often, even if you do), it’s not really as “cheap”‘ as it may first seem. For those with a data science or AI background (and even some without) it may become noticeably even quite early on that “training” using OpenAI’s API’s for GPT models may not quite work the same way as it does if you owned the model, especially with such an advanced model like the latest GPT flavors. It can get complicated quickly require developer setup and there may even be limits on what “training” really is since that’s not your infrastructure and what it means in OpenAI’s out of the box API’s is not quite the same thing that you may think it might mean – in some cases, this may translate to you not really being able to customize the AI the way you really need to.

Running custom AI infrastructure that you “100% own” can cost a fortune, requires lots of specialized in house experts, and you likely won’t get anywhere near the kind of ChatGPT 40, o1, o3 and GPT-4.5 April 2025 training quality in-house that you might get by doing something as simple as using a ChatGPT Pro subscription for, as of this writing, as little as $20 per month for one user. So where does that leave you for options?

Well we can consider simply using the $20/mo ChatGPT subscription itself and look at the simple options – but how good is ChatGPT for X++ exactly? Some users report that ChatGPT “does not seem to know a lot of things” about “Dynamics 365” (including X++, even things like Business Central AL code, or just Dynamics in general). Some users feel as an x++ developer that it’s “rare” when it can help them. Other users vaguely report that X++ is “not properly documented” and that ChatGPT is “not very good” at the solutions.

At Dynamics Edge, we actually strongly disagree with the idea that ChatGPT advanced AI and similar like Google Gemini, Anthropic Claude and the like are “not helpful” for X++, even AL, or Dynamics 365 training in general. Even as it is now without any fine tuning, ChatGPT from even as little as just one single Plus subscription, without even doing anything particularly complicated like using API’s or doing any “fine tuning” on the “AI model”, can be an immensely powerful tool for an X++ developer even just by itself depending on how exactly you use these kinds of tools.

Now, it does depend on how you use it. You can easily use ChatGPT and not really get anywhere  – whether it’s using X++ or doing something as simple as asking for the most basic thing – both can seem daunting and frustrating at times and may even make you feel like giving up on AI altogether or believing only “certain kinds of experts” can use it – and that includes after you took the generic “prompt engineering” courses which may not be particularly helpful to you especially for something like X++ development with the help of ChatGPT.

The truth is, some of these so-called “experts” – including even many who have documented backgrounds in AI and data science – are actually just as stuck as you are, or maybe even more so.
